Blog#1 My Work Place Tuesday October 11th
My workplace is called Lawrence Berkeley Lab at the Advanced Light Source lab division. They use light lasers for the use of scientists to use on multiple experiments for research. My WLE is a big corporation that is government funded and has a large faculty. My WLE is located in Berkeley California and has many buildings scattered around a large section of land where the buildings are primarily used for science purposes.1000 people work at the lab I work at,maybe even more.My workplace employs people who have Ph.d.'s and bachelor degrees. At my work site most people have a 4 year college degree. My workplace does research for companies, does self research and creates objects for other companies. My workplace strength's are science because it's a laboratory. My workplace has no weaknesses because it is that awesome.
Blog#2:My Mentor:Tuesday October 18th
My Mentor's name is Ryan Miyakawa and his job is working in Lithography at the Lawrence Berkeley Lab. My mentor's typical day is he arrives to work at 9 and stays until 5:30. He works on one of the multiple projects he has and sets goals for himself and ties in with our community skills of project management. He also has meetings and does research on his projects. He has always liked engineering and wanted to know how things actually worked so he was inspired to get down to the science of how objects function. He says he needed a strong math and physics back round in order to be were he is today. My mentor likes his job even turning down some job opportunities because he is happy with his job at the laboratory.
Blog#3:My Role: Tuesday October 25th
My main responsibility at my WLE is too create a mask, which is a master copy in lithography in order to start taking data for my project. This is the only task I am responsible for because it is important that I complete the mask in time to get data. A regular day for me is I arrive to work at 8:30 and go to my mentors office, where I stay there until around 11:00 to 12:00 working on a computer designing the mask. After lunch I came back to work at 1:00 until 3:00 working on more aspects of my mask and then I ask if I can take a break. My day then ends at 4:00 where I shut down my computer, say goodbye to my mentor and go home.
Blog#4:Project Brainstorm:Tuesday November 1st
I am thinking I will do a project based on lithography and take data with the mask I am creating for my project. I will then present the data to my mentor at the end of WLE in a keynote. My mentor gave me this project to do which is beneficial to his work and will give me great insight into what he does.I am excited to do this project because of the science that is going to be involved in it and will give me a great back round in science when I go to college. In the next week I will have to finish the mask quickly in order to take data to be able to present on december 13th.
Blog#5:Progress on my WLE Project: Tuesday November 18th
At my WLE I arrived at 8:45 and immediately started on my mask project until 11:00 where I then went to lunch. I came back at 1:00 and kept working on the project until 4:00. So far for the project I have only tried to complete the mask and I need to finish the project soon. My mentor and I have talked about finishing the project quickly in order to finish project and have something to present. The progress I have done so far is finished designing half of the mask and put on a grid in Microsoft paint. I need to work more quickly in order to finish my project on time.
Blog#6:Leadership Skills: Tuesday November 15th
The leadership skills I have used the most is complete projects effectively through completing certain tasks on my project. I am using this leadership skill well because I have tried to keep up with the goals I set for my project. I could improve using the leadership skill through meeting more deadlines and making realistic goals for myself. These skills help me keep track of my work and not lose track of what I need to do. The leadership skill my mentor uses the most is completing projects effectively as well because he has projects to complete and deadlines to meet.
Blog#7:Leadership Skills:Tuesday November 22nd
What I have learned about myself is that I can make deadlines and meet them independently as well as working with others to complete them. Some challenges i face at my wle were finishing my project and completing my hours because I started late in my WLE.I put my creativity to use at my work place by using it in my project which included using adobe illustrator and pictures. It affected me through giving me insight on whether I like working in science filled environment and whether it really is a job i would like to pursue.I believe you should try to work in different working environments through WLE to see what you are really interested in. At my WLE the skills I practiced were managing project effectively and thinking critically through creating a computer chip and finding ways to make it better. The things I do at my internship are very important to everyday life and we use everyday because it is computer chips. It will help me look at things differently through seeing how does it work and why does it work like that.
Blog#8:Professionalism:Tuesday November 29th
In order to find my WLE and get hired I had to first get the contact number from ms.Lantos, next i had to call and ask for an internship by leaving a voice mail, next I had to to talk the representative to get an internship, after that i had to just pass some online classes and sign some papers to work at my WLE.The most effective way for looking for an internship is to have a broad list of places you want to work at don't confine yourself to one place and just be open to all opportunities because there is always next year. My work place is great to work at because the people are so friendly and the work that you do is interesting and can be independent. The only thing not good about my work place varies because to me its the commute because it is far from where i live and takes me well over an hour to get home.
Blog#9:Life At My WLE:Tuesday December 6th
Today at my WLE I came in and started working on my project. I worked on it until lunch and then came back and worked on it again. I then decided to take a break and then came back to try to finish it. I am almost done with my project and am close to completing the first task. I think I have improved more as an intern because I am more responsible and concentrate more on my work. I am also more punctual by arriving earlier than my mentor. My workplace is great because everybody is so friendly and patient towards each other. The only thing I don't like is the commute because it takes awhile to get here but it's not terrible.
Blog#10:The End:Tuesday December 13th
My final thoughts in my WLE where that this internship gave me great insight on what I want to do in the future and greatly affected my decision on what I want to take in college. Lawrence Berkeley Lab is a great place to work if you are interested in science and recommended to any hardcore science student at Impact. This experience will most likely affect my work ethic through working harder and faster to get things done on time. It will also affect my career path in college to see which field of science I would like to pursue as a career as well.
